ANSI Launches Hydrogen Standards Initiative: Offer Industry Feedback and Attend March Webinars

The American National Standards Institute (ANSI), which oversees standards and conformity assessment activities in the United States, has launched a new Hydrogen Standards Coordination Initiative, and hydrogen leaders have upcoming opportunities to engage directly with the effort.

The Initiative is designed to advance safety and technical standards across the full hydrogen value chain: production, storage, transportation, carbon capture, utilization, and related infrastructure:

  • Phase I focuses on two deliverables: a comprehensive Hydrogen Standards Landscape database and the educational webinar series launching this month.
  • Phase II of the initiative launches in Spring 2026 and will include a technical workshop focused on pre-standardization research, standards gaps, and potential regulatory framework considerations. An executive report summarizing key challenges and recommendations will follow.

As hydrogen scales from its established industrial applications (e.g., petroleum refining, fertilizer production, and metal processing) into broader clean energy roles, including fuel cells and large-scale renewable energy storage, consistent standards become essential for safety, interoperability, and commercial viability.

Industry Input Requested

ANSI has issued a Request for Information (RFI) seeking details on published consensus standards, ongoing standards activities, and relevant guidance documents. Standards developing organizations and others are invited to complete ANSI’s RFI spreadsheet (Excel download) and send it to Christine Bernat (cbernat@ansi.org) by March 6, 2026

ANSI is also hosting free educational webinars on March 16 and March 31, 2026, featuring briefings from standards and code developers across the hydrogen sector. Both sessions include interactive dialogue with presenters. Interested in presenting? Fill out this form.
