The Hydrogen Fuel Cell Partnership (H2FCP) tracks every public hydrogen station's status through one tool: the Station Operational Status System, or SOSS.
Drivers check it before they head to a station. Station operators use it to report outages. Members use it to spot network trends. State agencies and Low Carbon Fuel Standard reporting participants rely on it too, and so do the outside map and reporting apps that pull SOSS data into their own platforms.
That's a lot riding on one system, and H2FCP wants it built to last. We’ve issued a Request for Information (RFI) asking web development firms and independent contractors to help modernize SOSS and its connected systems.
Should SOSS become a standalone system, or should it continue running within the same Drupal platform (that also powers h2fcp.org)? We haven’t decided. The RFI asks respondents to make the case for either option and recommend the strongest path for reliability, cost, and growth over the next several years.
The goals are concrete: faster, more dependable station status updates. Better tools for onboarding new station operators. A foundation that can support features like mobile apps and predictive outage reporting down the line.
“SOSS only works if drivers can count on what it tells them,” said Bill Elrick, Executive Director of H2FCP. “That's the standard this project has to meet. We issued this RFI to understand if there are better ways to develop and maintain SOSS. Whether that means a new standalone system or a stronger version of what we already have, we’re looking to see which path provides more value to drivers and the industry.”
