Hydrogen Is a Jobs Engine, and the Work Has Already Started 

Every hydrogen station that opens puts general contractors, pipefitters, electricians, and welders to work. 

How Many Jobs Does a Hydrogen Station Create? 

A workforce analysis commissioned by our organization found that building a typical light-duty hydrogen station generates about 13 job-years of employment, with general contracting, gas fitting, and electrical work claiming the largest shares. Under California's more ambitious deployment scenarios, station buildout alone could generate more than 24,000 job-years by 2035, and a national network of 3,300 stations would generate roughly 44,000. 

Clean energy positions pay roughly 25 percent above the national median wage, and most station development roles are open to workers with a high school diploma plus apprenticeship or on-the-job training. 

Hydrogen Manufacturing Jobs Are Growing

The manufacturing side is growing too. In Santa Ana, FirstElement Fuel is expanding its station component manufacturing facility by more than tenfold, with support from the California Energy Commission (CEC), adding local jobs in building cryopump systems and dispensing equipment. 

In Washington State, Douglas County PUD built the nation's first utility-owned renewable hydrogen production facility, creating skilled operations roles with strong career earning potential. 

On the Gulf Coast, Houston's economic development leaders are building learning pathways with community colleges and workforce boards to move experienced oil and gas workers into hydrogen careers, tapping skills that transfer almost directly. Research from McKinsey and the Center for Houston's Future projects a Texas clean hydrogen industry could support 180,000 jobs and add $100 billion to the state's economy.

Cal State LA Is Training the Next Generation of Hydrogen Engineers 

California's universities are building that same pipeline from the classroom up. At Cal State LA's Hydrogen Research and Fueling Facility, the largest hydrogen fueling and research facility on any U.S. university campus, serving engineering education and hands-on student training.

Over the past year and a half, the program has directed more than $100,000 toward paid internships and training for roughly 10 students, with support from California Jobs First by the Los Angeles County Economic Development Corporation (LAEDC), the Municipal Equipment Maintenance Association, the National Science Foundation's CREST program, and federal work-study funds. That training turns directly into jobs. Two participating students have already landed internships with FASTECH and FirstElement Fuel. 

The program's reach extends overseas as well. Cal State LA is one of four university partners, alongside institutions in Spain, France, and Italy, in a €30,000 research and exchange project on optimizing hydrogen refueling station operations, led by the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya and funded by Spain's Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades. 

A master's student from the University of Genoa is starting new research this year on hydrogen applications at ports, a natural fit given Los Angeles's position at the center of one of the busiest port complexes in the country. Last year, the university hosted a doctoral student from the University of Calabria, the third exchange student from that institution to date. 

Dr. David Blekhman, who leads the program and was named Cal State LA's 2025 President's Distinguished Professor, has spent years building that station into a training ground as much as a fueling site. The facility itself is temporarily decommissioned while it awaits a planned upgrade, a project that has hit delays on the Federal Highway Administration's end. Even so, the research and internship programs have kept running without interruption.

Hydrogen Jobs Are Reaching the Communities That Need Them Most 

These opportunities reach communities that need them most. In our workforce survey, 80 percent of station developers reported building in priority communities. 

“When people ask me what hydrogen means for the economy, I point to the paychecks,” said Bill Elrick, Executive Director of the Hydrogen Fuel Cell Partnership. “Contractors, pipefitters, electricians, plant operators, manufacturing workers, and others are earning a living on hydrogen today, in California and well beyond it. Every station we build and every facility we open widens that pipeline, and the skills these workers gain carry across the entire energy economy. That's what a durable industry looks like.”
