Port of Long Beach Invests $10 Million in Hydrogen Fuel Grants for Drayage Fleets

The Port of Long Beach is investing $10 million in fuel-cost assistance for hydrogen fuel-cell drayage truck operators, a strategic move to support early adopters of hydrogen technology and advance the nation's largest seaport complex toward zero-emission operations. The Hydrogen Fuel Grant Program also represents a significant market signal that hydrogen technology is viable for port logistics.

What does this mean for fleet operators? Eligible operators will receive monthly reimbursement for hydrogen fuel costs once Port staff confirm that their fuel cell trucks have visited Long Beach terminals.

If the full $10 million is deployed, the program will generate at least 3.7 million zero-emissions miles. The funding comes from the Port's Clean Truck Fund Rate program, which has already committed $27.5 million to battery-electric truck projects, and about 100 hydrogen fuel cell trucks are currently in operation at the Port.

Port leadership emphasized a "technology-neutral" approach to decarbonization. Different drayage operations have different duty cycles; hydrogen fuel cell trucks offer longer driving range and faster refueling than battery-electric alternatives, making them attractive for certain operations. The Port will evaluate the program every six months to ensure it remains responsive to market conditions.

Fleet operators who are ready to participate are encouraged to review the program details and eligibility requirements.
