Hydrogen developers and fleet operators eyeing the Central Coast have a new funding window.
The Santa Barbara County Air Pollution Control District (APCD) recently opened applications for its 2026 Clean Air Grant Program, with approximately $2.3 million available for voluntary projects that cut emissions and accelerate cleaner technologies.
Hydrogen fueling stations are explicitly on the eligible project list, alongside heavy-duty truck and bus replacements, transit buses, off-road equipment, and other alternative fueling infrastructure.
Individual awards range from $10,000 to $250,000. Individuals, businesses, government agencies, and nonprofits can all apply. Applications are competitively ranked, with priority given to projects located in disadvantaged communities, zero-emission technology, and projects that deliver high emission reductions at strong cost-effectiveness. All projects must comply with all rules and regulations.
Applications are open now through Friday, September 4, 2026.
The district has distributed more than $64 million in state and local funds over 37 years, eliminating several thousand tons of smog-forming pollution and particulate matter countywide.
For hydrogen station developers, regional programs like this one matter. Local air district grants can close the economics on early infrastructure in markets that statewide funding rounds often pass over, and Santa Barbara County sits squarely on freight and transit corridors connecting Southern California to the Central Coast.
