The National Renewable Energy Laboratory’s Transportation & Hydrogen Systems Center is seeking an engineer with experience in research and development of high power grid-connected hydrogen generation technologies. This position supports research and development addressing hydrogen generation from electrolyzers for grid integration applications. This position requires experience in the power electronics associated with hydrogen generation technologies. The successful candidate will understand power transactions between the grid and large industrial consumers, including a working knowledge of ISO/RTO operations, balancing areas, time-of-use pricing, demand charges, frequency and voltage regulation, and demand side management. The position requires demonstrated functional knowledge of common industrial electrical supplies (e.g. three phase power, 208, 240, 480V), rectifier and inverter operation, and DC/DC converter topologies (e.g. boost, buck, flyback), real-time digital simulators, and hardware-in-the-loop testing. Experience with variable, renewable power systems such as wind and PV is helpful. Designs and performs engineering research activities to develop new technologies, products, equipment and/or systems for future product introduction. Conducts studies to determine the most efficient materials, equipment, operations, processes and/or workflow. Prepares cost estimates and evaluates cost factors. Evaluates and implements new technologies, products, and/or systems. May direct engineering projects in support of Center and DOE priorities.
