As a leader, manages hydrogen infrastructure R&D projects, including staffing needs, budgets, milestones, deliverables, reporting to DOE and internally. Is able to build consensus across multiple disciplines including environmental health & safety, research operations, security (physical and cyber), finance, subcontracting, and other research disciplines in order to complete projects on time, with high quality. As an individual performer, plans, designs and performs engineering research activities to develop new technologies, products, equipment and/or systems for future product introduction. Conducts studies to determine the most efficient materials, equipment, operations, processes and/or workflow. Prepares cost estimates and evaluates cost factors. Evaluates new technologies, products, and/or systems.
The National Renewable Energy Laboratory’s Transportation & Hydrogen Systems Center is seeking an engineer with experience in research and development of hydrogen production and delivery infrastructure. This position requires experience in fuel cell vehicle infrastructure design, analysis, systems testing, and codes & standards. This position supports research and development addressing hydrogen infrastructure needs at the component and systems level for hydrogen stations, identifying research needs for the future hydrogen stations, and fuel cell or electrolyzer testing for grid integration applications. The research on hydrogen infrastructure includes but is not limited to accelerated component testing and station design and integration testing and code and standards development that supports the hydrogen station needs for production fuel cell electric vehicles. The research for fuel cells includes but is not limited to fuel cell testing for grid integration applications, code and standards development, performance, durability, and reliability analysis to support fuel cell applications that provide valuable operation features for transportation and stationary sectors.
Required Education, Experience, and Skills
Relevant PhD in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent relevant education/experience.
Or, relevant Master's Degree in Mechanical Engineering and 3 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience.
Or, relevant Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering and 5 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience.
Demonstrates broad understanding and wide application of engineering technical procedures, principles, theories and concepts in the field. General knowledge of other related disciplines.
Demonstrates leadership in one or more areas of team, task or project lead responsibilities. Demonstrated experience in management of projects. Very good writing, interpersonal and communication skills.
