California's Tyson Eckerle: Hydrogen presents a huge opportunity to transform our energy system
Publish Date: 11/18/2020
“We’ve made a lot of progress in California. The bottom line with hydrogen stations is creating a hydrogen network is hard, it’s really hard, but it’s also doable,” Eckerle continued.
“We started with light duty and we have 43 stations that are open and operating in California today that we’re really excited about. We’re bridging into medium and heavy-duty as well.”
“The private sector is really stepping up in a major way and started to take the lion’s share of responsibility for building out that network on the pathway to the 165 stations identified.”
Eckerle said the challenge associated with building out the network is bigger than any one company or agency.
“To do it right you have to take a systems approach,” he told conference attendees.

Nel ASA: Receives purchase orders for U.S. Navy PEM electrolyser stacks
Publish Date: 11/9/2020
Nel Hydrogen U.S., the U.S. subsidiary of Nel ASA (Nel, OSE:NEL), has received purchase orders for PEM electrolyser cell stacks from Raytheon Technologies´ Collins Aerospace Division, at a combined value of more than USD 5.4 million. Nel’s electrolyser stacks produce critical life support oxygen for U.S. Navy crews on multiple classes of nuclear-powered submarines and are being delivered under an exclusive contract.
The purchase order is part of an ongoing production contract with Collins Aerospace, and continues Nel’s history of supplying PEM electrolyser stacks for the production of life sustaining oxygen on board Navy submarines for over a decade. During the first half of 2020, Nel received additional orders for Navy stacks worth over $3.7M, bringing the total booked orders this year to over $9.1M.

‘Hydrogen Wars’ Pit Europe v. China for $700 Billion Business; U.S. sits on sidelines amid global race to cut CO2 emissions
Publish Date: 11/1/2020
“It’s countries going against countries to lock in market share,” said Gero Farruggio, head of renewables at research firm Rystad Energy. “We call it ‘the hydrogen wars’ because of the way governments are racing to subsidize these projects to be a leader.”
This is how policymakers can boost the hydrogen market

The initiative will generate up to 700 jobs and avoid emissions of 39,000 tCO2/year
Study shows how hydrogen fits in Atlantic region's energy transition
Publish Date: 10/29/2020
The study finds that for the Maritimes to realize hydrogen's full potential, the region must take a regionally cooperative approach to energy policy. Among its recommendations are development of a clean energy roadmap for the Atlantic region, creation of a strong regulatory framework with incentives to transform and decarbonize the region's energy system and aligned action plans, policies and high-profile projects that encourage local industry participation. The study shows that renewable hydrogen produced from wind combined with grid-scale hydrogen storage can be an enabler to increase energy independence, heavy duty transport can be a major contributor to hydrogen demand and the potential to use hydrogen for building heating is significant.
Collaborative Effort to Help Drive Emissions to Zero or Near-Zero By 2050; EPRI president says the United States could produce electricity with little to no carbon emissions by 2050 through the Low-Carbon Resources Initiative.

Hydrogen now supplies less than 5% of the world’s energy—most of it used for oil refining and chemical production—but research firm BloombergNEF says it could reach nearly a quarter of global energy consumption by 2050 with strong government policies promoting it. By then, the fuel could generate more than $2.5 trillion of direct revenue annually, according to the Hydrogen Council, a trade group that includes oil-and-gas majors.

Canada risks missing out on fast-moving hydrogen opportunity: report
Publish Date: 10/12/2020
Canada is among the top-10 global hydrogen producers, but most of this hydrogen is created using fossil fuels, making it part of the climate problem. Clean hydrogen—whether made with non-emitting electricity, in combination with carbon removal, or via other innovative technologies—remains a largely unrealized opportunity.
And yet Canada is among a small group of countries with the highest potential for exporting clean hydrogen, thanks to one of the least polluting electricity grids in the world and plenty of access to water.
