Hydrogen vs battery trucks | 'H2 may be needed for grid-constrained areas and double shifts, not just long distances'
“While logistics operators are aligned with the H2Accelerate view that hydrogen trucking will be required for long-haul, heavy-duty applications due to the operational flexibility it offers, further use cases where hydrogen offers operations advantages over BEVs have been identified,” the eight-page document states. “These include trucks operating in areas with significant grid constraints which will present challenges for BEV charging, and for use cases where vehicles are double shifted, requiring fast refuelling.”

A Third Surge in Innovation and Patents on Hydrogen Fuel Cell Vehicles
In fact, according to a recent report of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), patent applications on fuel cells are experiencing a third surge, with filings surpassing those that occurred in the mid-1980s and early 2000s.

“We are looking into hydrogen as a fuel, following a parallel path,” Rossi continued. “I’m just pulling a figure out of the air here, but we think electric will be 70 per cent of the car park in 2035, but not 100. It depends on usage – high payloads, high performance, very repetitive trips, for example. For us, for high performance, we believe that path could be very promising.”
Tevva: A Universal Battery-Hydrogen Delivery Truck Out Of London
While the truck is battery electric at its core, with a battery only range of up to 160 miles (108 kWh), adding the hydrogen energy source will almost double the range to 310 miles. The range extender is a 50 kW hydrogen fuel cell provided by Loop Energy. Tevva conducted rigorous testing with four potential fuel cell suppliers before selecting Loop for its overall performance and form factor. While the traditional control of range extenders is based on the battery falling below a certain state of charge, Tevva’s proprietary software predicts the optimal time to use the range extender by factoring in variables like route, weather and vehicle payload. This allows the fuel cell to be run at a constant lower power, which ultimately creates energy and cost efficiency for truck operators.
