Hawkins prefiles bill to promote hydrogen-powered vehicles
Publish Date: 12/7/2020
The first bill of the upcoming legislative session has been introduced. Following his successful effort with Senate Bill 5588 in 2019 to authorize public utility districts to produce and sell “renewable hydrogen,” Sen. Brad Hawkins has prefiled a bill for the 2021 legislative session to establish an eight-year statewide pilot project for the reduction of sales tax on purchases of fuel-cell electric vehicles. The bill so far has gained commitments of bipartisan support from nearly 20 co-sponsors.

Hydrogen – the Great Unifier?
Publish Date: 12/8/2020
For several months now, the pro- and anti-hydrogen lobbies have been waging a merciless battle in the media. It’s a miraculous solution for some, an enormous hoax cooked up by the oil giants for others. In this debate, the losers are the general public, unable to form an opinion, and humanity at large, desperately in need of a substitute for fossil fuels.

Targeted policies and robust certification schemes will be necessary to ensure that the green version is being produced and used across sectors. Those don’t exist yet, given the nascency of the space. But, as interest in new hydrogen applications grows, they should be a priority for industry, advocates, and state legislators to ensure that we’re not just shifting emissions from one point to another.

China, the world’s biggest market for electric vehicles, isn’t so quick to dismiss the alternative to batteries. Officials are promoting the development of hydrogen-powered cars, trucks and buses, with Beijing offering to reward cities that achieve adoption targets. In a 15-year plan for new-energy vehicles released on Nov. 2, China’s State Council said the country will focus on building the fuel-cell supply chain and developing hydrogen-powered trucks and buses. President Xi Jinping in September set a 2030 deadline for China to begin reducing carbon emissions.

SoCalGas to Test Technology that Could Transform Hydrogen Distribution and Enable Rapid Expansion of Hydrogen Fueling Stations; New device separates hydrogen from natural gas when the two gases are blended in pipelines
Publish Date: 12/16/2020
At scale, the technology would allow hydrogen to be easily and affordably transported via the natural gas pipeline system, then extracted and compressed at fueling stations that provide hydrogen for fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs). Created by Netherlands-based HyET Hydrogen, the technology is designed to provide pure highly-compressed hydrogen wherever a natural gas distribution system exists. A video illustrating the technology may be found here.
