SoCalGas Begins Assembling Award-Winning H2 Hydrogen Home
Publish Date: 3/2/2022

The H2 Hydrogen Home features a nearly 2,000 square-foot home, solar panels, a battery, an electrolyzer to convert solar energy to hydrogen and a fuel cell to supply electricity for the home. Hydrogen will also be blended up to 20% with natural gas and used in the home's tank-less water heater, clothes dryer, and gas stove, fireplace and BBQ grill. The home will function and feel exactly like a regular home but use reliable and clean energy 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year, by drawing power from solar panels on sunny days and converting excess energy into clean hydrogen, which can be stored and then converted back into electricity with an on-site hydrogen fuel cell when solar or batteries cannot provide enough energy. The home is also being constructed to LEED Platinum standards.

The materials for the home were delivered this week by clean Class 8 trucks powered by hydrogen and electric power supply systems that only emit water. The featured participants included two Hyundai XCIENT Fuel Cell trucks, part of a California Air Resources Board (CARB) and California Energy Commission (CEC) project called "NorCal ZERO" to deploy or supply 30 trucks in Northern California by early 2023, as well as two Kenworth T680s equipped with the Toyota fuel cell electric system, which are being demonstrated as part of the CARB Port of Los Angeles "Shore to Store" (S2S) project.

SoCalGas launches assembly of ‘Hydrogen Home’ in Downey
Publish Date: 3/2/2022

The H2 Hydrogen Home is a modular, prefabricated house that will act as a miniature microgrid — storing and providing resilient, low-carbon power when energy is needed — and demonstrate how such a system could be constructed on a larger scale to power residential neighborhoods and businesses, the utility said.

Accelerating Bus Electrification Toward Achieving Carbon Neutrality; Isuzu, Hino, and Toyota to Begin Study for Planning and Development of Next-generation FCEV Route Bus
Publish Date: 2/28/2022

Additionally, Isuzu, Hino, and Toyota have agreed to begin studying the planning and development of next-generation fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) route bus based on the BEV flat-floor route bus to be produced from FY2024.

The next-generation FCEV route bus will combine the platform of the BEV flat-floor route bus scheduled for launch in FY 2024, with Toyota's fully developed fuel cell system found in the Toyota Mirai and the SORA fuel cell bus. By sharing the same components between BEVs and FCEVs, Isuzu, Hino, and Toyota aim to significantly reduce costs, and by adopting new-generation fuel cell stacks and utilizing Toyota and Hino's FCEV bus development know-how to date, they aim to provide longer-life, higher-added-value electrified vehicles.

Through this initiative, Isuzu, Hino, and Toyota intend to contribute to the realization of a hydrogen-based society in Japan, by applying Japan's strengths in fuel cell technology.

Chevron, Iwatani Announce Agreement to Build 30 Hydrogen Fueling Stations in California
Publish Date: 2/24/2022

Chevron U.S.A. Inc. (Chevron), a subsidiary of Chevron Corporation (NYSE: CVX), and Iwatani Corporation of America (ICA), a wholly owned subsidiary company of Iwatani Corporation (TYO: 8088), today announced an agreement to co-develop and construct 30 hydrogen fueling sites in California by 2026.

As part of the agreement, Chevron plans to fund construction of the sites, which are expected to be located at Chevron-branded retail locations across the state. The stations will initially fuel light-duty vehicles while retaining the flexibility to service heavy-duty vehicles over the long term. Iwatani will operate and maintain the hydrogen fueling sites and provide hydrogen supply and transportation logistics services. Chevron plans to supply a portion of the fueling sites with excess hydrogen production capacity at its Richmond Refinery and future hydrogen production from pilot projects in Northern California.

How Clean Is Hydrogen? Platts, Others Seek to Give Fuel a Score
Publish Date: 2/16/2022

S&P Global Platts, the energy and commodities pricing service, has teamed up with a national lab and a nonprofit research group to create a tool for measuring the carbon intensity of different sources of hydrogen, showing the global-warming impact of each. The tool, a version of which could be ready in 18 months, won’t just look at how the hydrogen is made — whether it’s stripped from water or or natural gas, and which energy source is used to power its production. Instead, it will evaluate individual hydrogen production plants, giving each facility a score it can show to customers and investors. That’s the plan, at least, for what participants are calling the Open Hydrogen Initiative, or OHI.

Schumer In Direct Letter To U.S. Secretary Of Energy Says Hydrogen Production And Research Facilities From WNY, Rochester, & The Capital Region To Long Island Are Prime To Jolt U.S. Global Clean Energy Leadership
Publish Date: 2/15/2022

U.S. Senate Majority Leader Charles E. Schumer today launched a major push to make New York State home to the nation’s first Regional Clean Hydrogen Hub created by the bipartisan Infrastructure Investment & Jobs Law. In a direct letter to U.S. Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm, Schumer explained how New York is already a national leader in hydrogen energy production and research, with North America’s largest green hydrogen production facility currently being constructed in Western New York by Plug Power. Schumer said that if selected for federal investment, the Regional Clean Hydrogen Hub would mean thousands more clean energy jobs in New York and major federal investment to cement New York as a leader in the fight against climate change and the future of carbon free energy production.

California's Dream of a Carbon Neutral Future
Publish Date: 2/16/2022

The final pillar necessary in creating a hydrogen-powered future is preparing a workforce ready to maintain this new sector. And it seems we’re on track here as well. “Cal State LA has been educating students in hydrogen technologies and providing hands-on training at its Hydrogen Research and Fueling Facility for several years,” says David Blekhman, Ph.D., Technical Director for the facility. He added that student interest has increased in the past six months “as investment in hydrogen infrastructure has been gaining momentum.” In addition to the exciting work being done at CSULA, programs are also available at other California State campuses and through both the UC and community college systems.
