Experts say significant grid investments needed to phase out gas-powered vehicles in California
"If we try to move in this direction and only use battery electric vehicles, we will fail," Brouwer said. "The grid cannot charge every single transportation application. We must invest in both battery-electric vehicles and fuel-cell electric vehicles."
The professor added that if half of drivers in 2035 have hydrogen-electric vehicles, the power grid will not be as stressed. Those people can fill up their cars at hydrogen stations, which are much like gas stations, and will hopefully become more available throughout the state in the coming years.

New York: Governor Hochul Announces Maine and Rhode Island Join Multi-State Agreement to Propose a Regional Clean Hydrogen Hub
Governor Kathy Hochul today announced Maine and Rhode Island have signed on to a New York-led multi-state agreement, joining with Connecticut, Massachusetts and New Jersey to develop a proposal to become one of at least four regional clean hydrogen hubs designated through the federal Regional Clean Hydrogen Hubs program included in the bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act. The coalition of six states and now more than 60 clean hydrogen ecosystem partners are laying the groundwork for a proposal for the United States Department of Energy funding opportunity anticipated to be announced in September or October with up to $8 billion in total funding available. Today's announcement advances each State's leadership in clean hydrogen infrastructure deployment and supports New York's Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions 85 percent by 2050.

World premiere: 14 Coradia iLint to start passenger service on first 100% hydrogen operated route
Alstom, global leader in smart and sustainable mobility, is proud to announce that the world’s first hydrogen train, the Coradia iLint, reached another historical milestone today in Bremervörde, Lower Saxony, Germany. It is now used on the world premiere 100% hydrogen train route, in passenger operation. This regional train only emits steam and condensed water while operating with a low level of noise. The 14 vehicles with fuel cell propulsion belong to Landesnahverkehrsgesellschaft Niedersachsen (LNVG). LNVG had already started looking for alternatives to diesel trains in 2012 and thus provided momentum for the development of the trains in Germany. Other project partners for this world debut are the Elbe-Weser railways and transport company (evb) and the gas and engineering company Linde.

Toyota, NREL Collaborate to Advance Megawatt-Scale Fuel Cell Systems
Toyota Motor North America (Toyota) is collaborating with the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) to build, install and evaluate a 1-megawatt (MW) proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell power generation system at NREL’s Flatirons Campus in Arvada, Colorado.
This 3-year, $6.5 million collaboration is funded in part by DOE’s Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technologies Office in the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy and supports DOE’s H2@Scale vision for clean hydrogen across multiple applications and economic sectors.

California’s clean transportation future is missing a critical element: Hydrogen
While significant emphasis has been placed on electric vehicle battery technology and related charging infrastructure across the state, the California clean transportation future needs to include hydrogen fuel cell vehicle technology where it makes sense.
Several transit agencies across the state are already producing their own hydrogen fuel, and others are actively planning to significantly expand on this model. Mega-regional passenger rail systems, such as Valley Link, are preparing for this opportunity by securing 200 acres of environmentally approved parcels to build a green hydrogen facility to provide clean power to commercial trucks, transit buses and a 42-mile passenger rail system that will alleviate the congestion and poor air quality caused by the 100,000 commuters who traverse the Altamont Pass daily. As the state looks to invest new funding to support the development of hydrogen fuel production, it’s imperative that this investment support California’s clean transportation future through transit agency hydrogen producers. This model of sustainability and self-sufficiency is important, as it inherently connects the hydrogen fuel producer and user with the goal of reducing the cost of transit operations to the public and offsets state and federal subsidies.

SoCalGas Breaks Ground on First-of-its-Kind Technology to Produce Clean Hydrogen for SunLine Transit Agency's Hydrogen Fuel Cell Electric Buses
The demonstration will test STARS' technology, which was developed at the Pacific Northwest National Lab. The technology uses a combustion free process, so that it produces fewer greenhouse gas emissions compared to a conventional steam methane reforming process. Since the compact system is based on low-cost 12x1-inch, 3D-printed reactor disks and heat exchangers, it can be easily installed at fueling stations to help meet the demand while advancing climate and clean air goals. After its installation, the first STARS system will produce up to 80 kilograms of clean hydrogen a day, that's enough to fuel three of SunLine's zero-emission buses per day.

Labor Leaders, CEOs Call on Governor Newsom to Invest in Hydrogen to Meet Climate Goals
In a letter to the Governor today, the State Building & Construction Trades Council, California State Council of Laborers, District Council of Ironworkers and the California-Nevada Conference of Operating Engineers, along with the chief executives of Toyota, Hyundai, Chevron, Shell, Linde and True Zero, called for the immediate funding in the 2022-2023 state budget. This funding will support the buildout of 1,000 hydrogen fueling stations statewide, which will provide fueling access for 97% of disadvantaged communities and 94% of the geographic state.
“This is the dawn of an entirely new, clean and domestic power source made to serve the energy and transportation markets to achieve our shared goals,” notes the letter. “Funding to ‘finish the launch’ of the statewide fueling network is a low-risk, high-reward investment. At this still early stage in market development, the signal California sends on hydrogen will impact private investment decisions.”

New TravelCenters of America Survey Finds that Trucking Fleets Plan to Invest in EV and Hydrogen Vehicles to Meet Decarbonization Goals;
“This white paper, the first in a series about the trucking industry’s transition to sustainable fuels and TA’s role in that process, identifies the key challenges the industry is facing and the support it will need from federal and state governments to be successful,” said Jon Pertchik, Chief Executive Officer of TravelCenters of America. “One of the key findings is that many companies are hesitant to fully commit to alternative energy vehicles until the technology and infrastructure have matured enough for them to maintain efficient operations during the transition period and beyond. With the current range of EV and hydrogen-powered heavy-duty trucks, fleet leaders want to see a substantial number of available fast-charging and/or refueling stations before making larger investments in new vehicles. TA plans to be a leader in providing EV charging stations and hydrogen refueling for trucks at its over 275 travel centers as the industry adopts these sustainable fuels.”

Hydrogen Reality Check #1: Hydrogen Is Not a Significant Warming Risk
The Myth
Recent reports have suggested that large-scale production of hydrogen could do more harm than good in the effort to reduce global warming.
The Reality
The climate benefit from a well-regulated clean hydrogen economy outweighs the impact of any emissions that hydrogen would add to our energy system, especially if we prioritize hydrogen produced from renewables-powered electricity.
