Toshiba Commissions PV-powered Hydrogen Refueling Station in Japan
Publish Date: 8/2/2022

H2One ST unit uses the sun as its energy source. It consists of a solar PV generation unit, hydrogen and water storage tanks, a water electrolysis unit, a storage battery unit, and a pure hydrogen fuel cell unit.

The plant gets its power supply from a solar generation of 20MW capacity and grid power. Power generated from solar energy is stored in the battery. When the need arises, water electrolysis takes place to produce hydrogen in a carbon-free setting. The hydrogen is then stored in a tank which delivers it to the fuel cells.

Falls firms awarded low-cost power for expansion projects
Publish Date: 7/26/2022

Linde was awarded a 22-MW hydropower allocation for a $75 million expansion project to further advance the firm’s production of green hydrogen. The power authority said the project is expected to create 11 new, full-time, permanent positions while retaining 81 existing jobs.

Linde’s application was also considered under the Power Authority’s green jobs evaluation criteria and supports the goals of New York’s Climate Act, according to the power authority. Linde’s expansion also furthers New York State’s Regional Clean Energy Hydrogen Hub ambitions, officials said.

Could hydrogen-fuelled flights be a reality by 2035?
Publish Date: 7/25/2022

A new report by the World Economic Forum and University of Cambridge’s Aviation Impact Accelerator explores how aviation can achieve a true zero climate impact.

Industry leaders are optimistic about how alternative propulsion technology, particularly hydrogen, could address aviation's climate impact in the future.

By 2035, hydrogen fuel cells could be used to electrify mid-range flights and hydrogen combustion aircraft could be used on long-haul flights.

Industry reacts to clean hydrogen tax credits in the US Tax and Climate Bill
Publish Date: 7/29/2022

Following Thursday’s (July 28) surprise $369bn climate and tax package from the US Senate, hydrogen industry players have offered their reaction to the Bill which offers a $3 per kg tax credit for clean produced hydrogen, and further credits for hydrogen fuel cell-electric vehicles.

Jason Few, CEO of FuelCell Energy, based in Connecticut, US, said in part of a statement, “Strong policy direction from the federal government provides the private sector important market certainty to confidently invest our shareholders capital and expand operations.

Washington: DOUGLAS PUD MOVING FORWARD TO BUILD HYDROGEN PLANT

It'll also serve to absorb much of the stress that leads to wear and tear at its river dam known as the Wells Hydroelectric Project.

Meaghan Vibbert with the PUD says the hydrogen plant will take in constant signals that now go to big mechanical equipment at the dam that has to instantly adjust to fluctuations in the regional power grid.

"The idea is to increase our efficiencies and decrease our maintenance necessary on those big units by doing all of the fluctuations there at the hydrogen plant rather than the hydroelectric project," said Vibbert.

SoCalGas Announces the Commissioning of Carbon-Negative Waste-to-Energy Technology at Los Angeles Facility
Publish Date: 7/20/2022

Southern California Gas Co. (SoCalGas) today announced that Kore Infrastructure has successfully begun testing and demonstrating its carbon-negative, waste-to-energy modular system at the utility's Los Angeles facility. The innovative technology is designed to divert organic waste from California landfills and convert it into carbon-negative hydrogen and renewable natural gas (RNG).

Kore plans to demonstrate the production of 99.999% pure hydrogen that would be suitable for fuel cell electric cars, trucks, buses, and trains by the third quarter of 2022. The demonstration facility has the potential to process up to 24 tons per day of organic feedstock and produce up to one metric ton of carbon negative, UltraGreen hydrogen™ per day, enough hydrogen for over 1,400 fuel cell electric cars.

Hydrogen: A Climate Solution
Publish Date: 7/19/2022

Carbon Solutions analysts modeled dozens of typical hydrogen production pathways through the use of peer-reviewed published literature and tools like Argonne National Laboratory’s GREET Lifecycle Model. In addition to the conventional SMR process mentioned above, we also included hydrogen produced via autothermal reforming (ATR), a process similar to SMR. Both the SMR and ATR processes are compatible with carbon capture equipment, leading to deep carbon reductions when captured CO2 is stored permanently. We also studied hydrogen production via electrolysis, where water molecules are split into hydrogen and oxygen through the use of electricity. When powered primarily with zero-carbon electricity from renewables or nuclear power, electrolysis-based hydrogen can provide some of the largest GHG reductions of the pathways we studied.

Hydrogen vs battery trucks | 'H2 may be needed for grid-constrained areas and double shifts, not just long distances'
Publish Date: 7/19/2022

“While logistics operators are aligned with the H2Accelerate view that hydrogen trucking will be required for long-haul, heavy-duty applications due to the operational flexibility it offers, further use cases where hydrogen offers operations advantages over BEVs have been identified,” the eight-page document states. “These include trucks operating in areas with significant grid constraints which will present challenges for BEV charging, and for use cases where vehicles are double shifted, requiring fast refuelling.”
