Lancaster, CA, Announces Partnership with Global Hydrogen Leader, Choshu Industries
Publish Date: 5/9/2022

The partnership will initially seek to integrate Choshu's "SHiPS," a containerized hydrogen production and refueling station system, and "MizTomo," a stationary fuel cell power system, into the City's Green Energy Microgrid (GEM) system.

The "SHiPS" and "MizTomo" systems deployment represent the first projects of Lancaster's partnership with Choshu. These systems can be scaled to extend the City's hydrogen capacity to other sectors. Choshu and Lancaster will explore additional opportunities to supply hydrogen to commercial users and to support the city's fleet goal. "Lancaster has committed to having the first all-hydrogen municipal fleet in the United States. We plan to replace Lancaster's current fleet of passenger vehicles with new hydrogen vehicles as leases on gas vehicles expire" said Parris. Additionally, Lancaster is engaged with several hydrogen refueling station providers to develop a network of passenger and heavy-duty vehicle stations.

One million milestone hit by Wrightbus
Publish Date: 5/6/2022

The miles are expected to only continue to rise, as 70% of all vehicles leaving Wrightbus’ Ballymena factory in 2022 will be zero-emission products, up from 30% in 2021.

The Wrightbus Streetdeck Hydroliner entered passenger service in January 2021, with buses in operation in London, Birmingham, Dublin, and Belfast, in addition to its Aberdeen fleet.

Hydrogen: Commission supports industry commitment to boost by tenfold electrolyser manufacturing capacities in the EU
Publish Date: 5/5/2022

Today, Commissioner for Internal Market Thierry Breton and European electrolyser manufacturers met in Brussels to discuss how to increase industry's capacity to produce electrolysers used to produce clean hydrogen. The Commissioner and 20 industry CEOs signed a Joint Declaration whereby industry committed to a tenfold increase of its electrolyser manufacturing capacities by 2025. This will enable the annual EU production of 10 million tons of renewable hydrogen by 2030, set as target in the March 2022 REPowerEU Communication. It will improve Europe's sustainable and secure energy supply and reduce EU's reliance on Russian gas.

Hydrogen Economy Hints at New Global Power Dynamics
Publish Date: 1/15/2022

“Hydrogen could prove to be a missing link to a climate-safe energy future”, Francesco La Camera, Director-General of IRENA said. “Hydrogen is clearly riding on the renewable energy revolution with green hydrogen emerging as a game changer for achieving climate neutrality without compromising industrial growth and social development. But hydrogen is not a new oil. And the transition is not a fuel replacement but a shift to a new system with political, technical, environmental, and economic disruptions.”

Green Hydrogen: A Currency for the Energy Transition
Publish Date: 4/6/2022

But many aspects of the burgeoning green hydrogen market have yet to be established, including the benchmark currency and universal volume in which green hydrogen is traded internationally. According to the IRENA report, the currencies and pricing mechanisms established are likely to have considerable geopolitical effects.

GM is commercializing its fuel cell business. Here's a look behind the scenes
Publish Date: 5/8/2022

GM has been working on fuel cells for decades, and has done demonstrations, but now those fuel cells, developed with Honda Motor Co., will be sent into real-world applications. The automaker foresees both technologies as avenues to a zero-emissions future as it continues to make internal-combustion vehicles for at least the next decade.

And what's developed and tested in this lab will go directly into what's built at the manufacturing joint venture operation, Fuel Cell System Manufacturing LLC, GM operates with Honda in Brownstown Township.

Last year, Hydrotec said its fuel cells would be used on a fleet of Navistar Inc. manufactured trucks that will be piloted this year by J.B. Hunt Transport Inc. Wabtec Corp. then announced it would use fuel cell systems in its locomotives and Hydrotec signed a joint development agreement with Liebherr-Aerospace to work on a hydrogen fuel cell-based electrical power generation system for aircraft.

The “H2goesRail” project is being funded as part of the National Innovation Program for Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technology (NOW GmbH) with €13.74 million by the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport (BMDV). The funding guideline is coordinated by NOW GmbH and implemented by project lead Jülich.

“In its coalition agreement, the federal government agreed to electrify 75% of the country’s rail network by 2030,” said Michael Theurer, Parliamentary State Secretary in the BMDV. “Here, alternative drives can help reduce emissions from diesel rail transport. This way, we’ll be able to operate virtually climate-neutral on rail routes where full electrification is not possible. The H2goesRail project will not only test the use of hydrogen for rail, but substantially advance the technology.”

PG&E Launches the Nation’s Most Comprehensive Study on Hydrogen’s Feasibility Within Gas Pipelines
Publish Date: 5/2/2022

Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) today announced that it is launching the nation’s most comprehensive end-to-end hydrogen study and demonstration facility, which will examine the future potential of the zero-carbon fuel hydrogen as a renewable energy source for not only PG&E customers but the entire global natural gas industry.

The centerpiece of the study, known as Hydrogen to Infinity (H2∞), is a large-scale project that will blend hydrogen and natural gas in a stand-alone transmission pipeline system. H2∞ will enable PG&E and its partners (Northern California Power Agency [NCPA], Siemens Energy, the City of Lodi, GHD Inc., and University of California at Riverside) to conduct a complete study of different levels of hydrogen blends in a multi-feed, multi-directional natural gas pipeline system that is independent from its current natural gas transmission system.

Hydrogen substitution for natural gas in turbines: Opportunities, issues, and challenges
Publish Date: 6/18/2021

To summarize, this paper  has shown, first, that hydrogen is certainly an acceptable, very clean fuel.  Second, it has shown that it can be used at low levels in existing fielded systems, and some low NOx gas turbines exist in the field today that can operate with H2 levels of up to 50% , cofired with natural gas.  Furthermore, systems have been developed to operate with pure hydrogen.  The key development challenge for the future is low NOx, fuel flexible systems, that can be readily operated with a range of fuel compositions, ranging from pure H2 to pure natural gas. Figure 3 below summarizes the hydrogen readiness, R&D needs, and NOx compliance of these various technologies.  All of these will enable the combustion technology of the future — low NOx, wide operability range, fuel flexible combustion systems capable of operating up to 100% hydrogen.

Toyota Motor Europe to supply Toyota Fuel Cell Module to second bus OEM
Publish Date: 5/2/2022

The TFCM2-F-60 is a second generation flat-type module that produces 60kW power and can be easily integrated into the roof of the bus, alongside the battery and hydrogen tanks. A major benefit of Toyota’s fuel cell technology is that the range of the all-electric bus can be extended in urban traffic to around 400km for the solo bus and up to 350km for the articulated version of the bus. The combination of the battery and the fuel cell as a range extender eliminates the need for intermediate charging on-the-go.
