Utility giant PG&E Corp. and Energy Vault Holdings Inc. plan to create a microgrid covering most of Calistoga, a small town of restaurants, tasting rooms and shops at Napa Valley’s northern end. Stellantis, the world third-largest carmaker, launched hydrogen-powered mid-size vans late last year and aims to expand its hydrogen offer to large vans in Europe in 2024 and in the U.S. in 2025, "while further exploring opportunities for heavy-duty trucks".
Chief Executive Carlos Tavares said Symbio's technical roadmap "perfectly" matched with Stellantis hydrogen roll-out plans in Europe and in the U.S.

Sufficient, sustainable and circular: Critical materials for scaling up hydrogen
The key conclusion from the study is that the scale of the raw materials impact of hydrogen and fuel cell technologies is small, relative to the scale of both current demand for critical raw materials and the outlook for projected demand in view of the energy transition imperative. This, however, does not mean the scale of critical raw materials use in the hydrogen value chain should be ignored. Adoption of frameworks such as the World Bank Group’s Climate-Smart Mining Framework can help manage the use of critical raw materials in hydrogen and fuel cells deployment, along with providing security of supply of the key critical raw materials needed for hydrogen deployment.
A further positive conclusion from the report is that the essential minerals and metals for clean hydrogen technologies will likely be in sufficient supply, have the potential to be sustainably sourced and can become part of a circular economy, with high percentage recycle recovery rates. These facts, when coupled with international cooperation on critical raw materials supply, are all good news for hydrogen.
The report also highlights that in some cases, such as platinum, the demand for minerals from hydrogen industry may actually relieve stress that could occur with the decline in demand from present uses, supporting the industry and the employment it currently offers, especially in southern Africa.

Influential politicians from both parties have taken part in the hub coalitions.
Sen. Joe Manchin, the Democratic chair of the Senate’s Energy and Natural Resources Committee, helped convene a blue hydrogen-oriented coalition in West Virginia. Democratic governors like New York’s Kathy Hochul and California’s Gavin Newsom have championed green hydrogen’s role in their own states’ plans. And Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves, a Republican, asked the Energy Department last year to devote “all available resources” to a $3 billion concept in which solar-derived hydrogen would be stored in an enormous underground salt cavern.
Some of the energy sector’s most powerful players are involved in hub plans, too. They include several of the nation’s biggest power utilities, like Duke Energy Corp. and Dominion Energy Inc. Also involved are the country’s largest natural gas producer, EQT Corp.; officials at the Port of Long Beach and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey; steelmakers like Cleveland-Cliffs Inc. and Nucor Corp.; and gray hydrogen producers like Linde PLC.
Most of the coalitions have offered relatively scant details on what they are proposing. But some, like those led by California and New York, have emphasized green hydrogen’s role in their plans. Others, like those from Midwest and Southeast states, have referenced the pink or blue types.

Nilsson Energy has signed a distribution agreement with the French company EODev (Energy Observer Developments) to sell GEH2® fuel cell power generators on the Nordic market. The portable fuel cell generator provides unique opportunities wherever zero emission energy is needed.
The fuel cell generator is manufactured by EODev outside Paris and the “heart” of the generator is a Toyota fuel cell, the same technology that powers Toyota’s hydrogen car Mirai. The agreement follows a first successful collaboration including the GEH2® between Nilsson Energy and Toyota Sweden earlier this year.

Since the 1950s, the site has been used to produce sodium chlorate, an industrial compound used in bleaching for the paper industry, but that process results in about 15 tonnes of byproduct hydrogen per day, most of which is vented and simply dissipates into the atmosphere. ERCO will leaseback a portion of the property and continue with their operations while HTEC will be installing equipment to capture and purify that otherwise lost energy and prepare it for distribution.
