Hydrogen patents indicate shift towards clean technologies such as electrolysis, according to new joint study by IEA and EPO
Hydrogen technology development is shifting towards low-emissions solutions such as electrolysis, according to a joint study of patents by the European Patent Office (EPO) and the International Energy Agency (IEA).
The report is the first of its kind and uses global patent data to provide comprehensive up-to-date analysis of innovation in all hydrogen technologies. It covers the full range of technologies, from hydrogen supply to storage, distribution and transformation, as well as end-use applications.

Truck Freight Routes Could Be Hydrogen Fueling Station Backbone
California fuel cell advocates are urging a national strategy to replace diesel-powered heavy trucks at major U.S. ports and link future regional hydrogen hubs to create a fueling infrastructure.
That scenario was revealed by Bill Elrick, executive director of the California-government-backed Hydrogen Fuel Cell Partnership, who led a session called “Heavy-Duty Implementation for Electric and Hydrogen Fuel Cell Vehicles” at the Transportation Research Board Annual Meeting on Jan. 9.

Study: Advances in Power-to-Gas Technologies: Cost and Conversion Efficiency
Abstract
Widespread adoption of hydrogen as an energy carrier is widely believed to require continued advances in Power-to-Gas (PtG) technologies. Here we provide a comprehensive assessment of the dynamics of system prices and conversion efficiency for three currently prevalent PtG technologies: alkaline, polymer electrolyte membrane, and solid oxide cell electrolysis. We analyze global data points for system prices, energy consumption, and the cumulative installed capacity for each technology. Our regression results establish that, over the past two decades, every doubling of cumulative installed capacity resulted in system prices coming down by 14-17%, while the energy required for electrolysis was reduced by 2%. Incorporating multiple forecasts of future deployment growth, our calculations project that, in the coming decade, all three technologies will become substantially more economical than previously thought. Specifically, the life-cycle cost of electrolytic hydrogen production is projected to get close to the $1.0/kg cost target set by the U.S. Department of Energy for the year 2030.

Japan Looks to Promote a Hydrogen Society; Prime Minister Kishida Fumio’s government plans to enact new laws to support the creation of a hydrogen supply chain.
Importantly, it has been pointed out that FCVs “may yet threaten Tesla” given the fact that Toyota, the world’s second largest automaker, has made consistent and strategic commitments to FCVs in collaboration with Honda. Therefore, major automakers in Japan and the world still find FCVs promising, and it has been argued that FCVs could be Tesla’s “biggest threat” in the future. In terms of recharging, for example, FCVs are superior to EVs because the hydrogen tank can be refilled in less than five minutes at a hydrogen station, whereas it takes about 15 minutes for EVs to be charged from 30 to 50 percent. It takes about an hour for EVs to fully recharge at a charging station.

Hydrogen among public’s most favoured climate technologies, according to Bosch study
A new study by Bosch has found that 41% of people surveyed globally believe hydrogen and fuel cells have the greatest potential to drive sustainability in the future, putting it in joint first with climate engineering.
The Bosch Tech Compass 2023 surveyed people around the world to take the temperature on feelings and public perception towards technology. A headline figure of the report was that 83% of respondents think that future technology will play a key role in combating climate change, up from 76% from the 2022 survey.

Green hydrogen could fuel Gulf of Mexico wind build as 'logical next step' in US offshore: Aegir
But with new, long-term tax credits built in to the US Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) signed by President Joe Biden in August and the opportunity to apply for funding to establish ‘clean hydrogen’ hubs under the federal H2 Hubs programme, “green hydrogen production is poised to be the main driver and off-take route for offshore wind in the GoM”, said Aegir.
