Biden-Harris Administration Announces Funding for Zero-Emission Medium- and Heavy-Duty Vehicle Corridors, Expansion of EV Charging in Underserved Communities
The selected projects include:
-
CALSTART: East Coast Commercial ZEV Corridor. This project will launch an intensive strategic planning effort to spur the deployment of commercial medium- and heavy-duty (MHD) zero-emission vehicle (ZEV) infrastructure through the development of an East Coast Commercial ZEV Corridor along the I-95 freight corridor from Georgia to New Jersey.
-
Cummins Inc.: MD-HD ZEV Infrastructure Planning with Focus on I-80 Midwest Corridor. This project will develop an extensive two-phase MD-HD EV Charging and H2 Fueling Plan for the Midwest I-80 corridor serving Indiana, Illinois, and Ohio, to support 30% of the MD-HD fleet using ZEV technologies by 2035.
-
GTI Energy: Houston to Los Angeles (H2LA)–I-10 Hydrogen Corridor Project. This project will develop a flexible and scalable blueprint plan for an investment-ready hydrogen fueling and heavy-duty freight truck network from Houston to LA (H2LA) along I-10, including the Texas Triangle region, and in the process develop methodology for future corridor plans across the country.

DOE: Regional Clean Hydrogen Hubs Notifications
Tags: H2 Hubs
Hydrogen is having a moment; Clean hydrogen technologies are required to reach net-zero emissions by 2050.
...the DOE encouraged 33 teams to flesh out their plans and formally move forward in vying for government support. It’s likely that others will decide to move forward with their plans, too, even if they aren’t selected to receive some slice of the $7B in public funding available to support these projects. Pre-applicants requested over $60B from the DOE; if all of these projects were to materialize, they would bring over $150 billion in private capital to the task of building regional clean hydrogen hubs.

$20 million in Hydrogen Funding Awarded by the Hydrogen Centre of Excellence
One of the successful projects is the proposed Bremner 100 per cent Hydrogen Community in Strathcona County, Alberta. Together, ATCO and Qualico are studying the logistics, technology requirements and other considerations involved in safely and affordably developing 100 per cent pure hydrogen communities – an important step towards eliminating carbon emissions that are produced when we heat our homes and use hot water. Findings will demonstrate feasibility and contribute to designing this unique community. A future home to 85,000 residents and to commercial and industrial businesses, Bremner will be Sherwood Park’s newest community, a Canadian first, and globally, the largest scale project of its kind.

Methanol, hydrogen and battery progress for passenger ships
Progress has also been made for deploying hydrogen in the passenger ship sector. A new Norwegian consortium is looking to develop the hydrogen value chain for a Northern Xplorer cruise vessel.
The Consortium partners comprise zero-emissions cruise venture Northern Xplorer, hydrogen provider and owner of infrastructure Norwegian Hydrogen, high-capacity hydrogen transfer system supplier HYON, ship designers Multi Maritime and hydrogen storage system provider Hexagon Purus Maritime.
The partners signed an MoU in January with the goal of developing a complete hydrogen value chain for Northern Xplorer’s first zero-emissions cruise ship featuring fuel cells and electric propulsion and making pollution-free hydrogen available to the wider maritime market.

Toyota to supply its fuel cell modules to European truck company Hyliko
Globally, Toyota is already working with multiple truck partners to integrate fuel cell technology in heavy-duty transport. The ZANZEFF “Shore to Store” project in US, which started back in 2019, recently proved that fuel cell electric trucks can match diesel performance and provide a zero-emissions alternative ready for commercial deployment.

Ohio starts to make its mark on the hydrogen market
"When we started, HFCs weren't on our radar screen," he says. "We soon realized, however, that CNG was a waypoint on the path to our goal, not the ultimate destination. As we learned more and more about alternative fuels it became apparent that HFCs were the real long-term sustainability solution we were seeking."
The buses initially cost $2 million each. Now they're down to $1 million. Stark County used $20 million in state and federal grants to pay for 15 hydrogen buses.
Conrad says he gets calls every week from municipalities looking to get hydrogen buses. He has talked to Cincinnati.

Developing a Robust Hydrogen Market in Texas
Texas is well-situated to lead in hydrogen market development, given its existing comparative advantages. These include:
A robust industrial sector, especially in petroleum products, chemicals, plastics, and rubber manufacturing (13.2% of U.S. GDP in these sectors, collectively, in 2021) co-located with the nation’s largest regional port capacity.
An existing hydrogen market with two-thirds of U.S. hydrogen transport infrastructure.
An investment environment that is generally supportive of infrastructure development.
A large natural gas production, transport, storage, and end-use footprint (accounting for 60.5% of U.S. GDP in oil and gas extraction and 24.6% of U.S. GDP in pipeline transportation in 2021).
Excellent geology for long-term storage of hydrogen and CO2.
Deep expertise in logistics and supply chain management (accounting for 11.6% of U.S. GDP in wholesale trade and 10.0% of U.S. GDP in transportation and warehousing).

Port of Corpus Christi Horizons Clean Hydrogen Hub and Trans Permian H2Hub Merge to Create Integrated Regional Clean Hydrogen Hub Proposal
The US Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Clean Energy Demonstration has encouraged both the Port of Corpus Christi Horizons Clean Hydrogen Hub (HCH2) and Trans Permian (Trans Permian) H2Hub to submit full applications through the DOE Regional Clean Hydrogen Hubs Program. Today, the Port of Corpus Christi and Trans Permian announced they are combining the two Hydrogen hubs into a single application, for which the Port of Corpus Christi will be the prime applicant.
The HCH2 Concept Paper, submitted to the DOE on November 7, names approximately 30 private sector team members as owners, developers and/or operators, offtakers, and end users of various hydrogen value chain projects and supporting infrastructure.

25 hydrogen taxis now on roads across Hamburg; 350 e-taxis approved as part of "Future Taxi"
The response to the e-taxis has been entirely positive, according to Anjes Tjarks, Senator for Transport, and said it was "exciting to see hydrogen-powered vehicles proving themselves" in everyday use. "But regardless of battery-run or hydrogen, the vehicles no longer give off emissions in Hamburg." Bülent Aktas and M. R. Safar Nejad, managing partners of Best Taxi GmbH, stressed: "The charging infrastructure for taxis must be expanded and more hydrogen filling stations must be built and the hydrogen-powered taxis should be bookable on the "Free Now" app."

Douglas County PUD Moves Into Phase Two of Green Hydrogen Project
Douglas PUD recently signed a contract with IMCO General Construction for phase one of its hydrogen production and fueling facility being built in Baker Flats. Site preparation, underground utilities and storage tank installation are complete at the site. Production of hydrogen is scheduled for June 2024.
The Baker Flats facility has capacity to accommodate up to 80 MW of green hydrogen production.
Douglas PUD said the additional hydrogen production capacity would create more opportunities for the utility to balance the integration of renewables resources, variable seasonal pricing, and fish water quality concerns at its Wells Hydroelectric Project. In addition, increased efficiencies will reduce generator unit maintenance costs, which translates to better rates and reliability for our customer owners, the utility said.
